In 2003 the IAAF World Athletics Final replaced the IAAF Grand Prix Final, which strives to have a consistent program of thirty five events in the World Final. The participants of the final are decided by the top seven of last seas at the AAF Golden League events in each discipline, only up to the 800 meter events, and then the top eleven in any events 1500 meters or more.

The final is two days long and the IAAF has a wildcard option, that allows them to invite up to five additional athletes if they decide that there are some that deserve to be in the final. Competitors that place 9th through 12th receive a cash prize of $1000, while up to $30,000 will be awarded to the winners. Competitors may also receive a $100,000 bonus for breaking any world record.
In 2003, the event was September 13th and 14th and was held at the Stade Louis II and Fontveille, which stayed that way until 2005. From 2006 to 2007, the competition was in Stuttgart, at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion. In 2008, the event was held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart, while this year the event is September 12th through the 13th, at the Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki.
