The PDC World Darts Championship is a world championship competition for the sport of darts, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The biggest of the PDC tournaments, it traditionally begins in late December, finishing in early January just as the BDO's version gets underway.

The Stan James World Matchplay from the Winter Gardens in Blackpool is happening from Thursday, July 23rd to Sunday, July 26th. This darts tournament is played in legs format, and overseen by the PDC. The first match was played in 1994, and the tournament has been going continuously since then. Larry Butler won the first ever tourney, from the Empress Ballroom at Blackpool, beating Dennis Priestley 16-12. The current holder of the title is Phil Taylor.

In 2008, Taylor beat James Wade for the win, and set a record of an average of 109.47. This year, the final was between Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld, and it was Taylor once again with the win, breaking his own average record with a new one of 110.94. This is the second biggest darts tournament in the world, with tickets selling out just days after they went on sale.

The way the tournament is played is in the legs format, which means that there is no deciding leg. This is the only major tournament to conduct itself in this format, and players must win by two legs. The first round is played around 10 legs, with tiebreaker plays continuing on a score of 9-9 until one player or another reaches two legs ahead.

Other champions in the past have included Peter Evison in 1996, Rod Harrington is 1998 and 1999, Colin Lloyd in 2005 and James Wade in 2007, but with the exception of Larry Butler winning the very first tournament, the rest of the wins are all dominated by Phil Taylor. Taylor had 28 wins in a row starting in the year 2000.
