The ABSA Currie Cup is upon us, and as this 2009 premier South Africa Rugby competition gets started fans are ready to watch some great Rugby action. This tournament can trace its roots all the way back to 1889 and is one of the most historic Rugby competitions in all of South Africa. In fact, the Gold Trophy, the prize for the winners of the competition, is regarded as the most prestigious award in all of domestic Rugby in South Africa. The format for the current Currie Cup has the competition in two different divisions, which include the eight teams making up the Premier division, which actually contest the Currie Cup competition, and the six teams that are part of the First Division. These six teams play with the hopes to be promoted to the Premier Division. The qualifying is a double round robin, each team playing each other team both at home and in an away game. They get four points if they win a game, and receive two for game that ends in a draw.

The teams can also get a bonus point for scoring four tries in a single match, or if they lose by seven points or less. When the round robins are over the top four teams move onto the knockout, and go onto the final. Last year, the Natal Sharks beat the Blue Bulls 14-9. This year, the knockout stages are just beginning and after round nine it looks like the Sharks are on top. Below them is the Western Province, with 32 points, same as the Sharks, as well as the GWK Griquas and the Blue Bulls with two points in the number four spot.
