Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Live

The first ever Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games of Other Events will be held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010, and aims to bring together talented young athletes – aged from 14 to 18 - from around the world. The Youth Olympic Games will educate, engage and influence young athletes, inspiring them to play an active role in their communities. 3,600 athletes and 1,450 officials will participate in 26 sports, and adopt and live by the Olympic values during the games. The young athletes will participate in high-level competitions, alongside a Culture and Education Programme focused on five themes: Olympism and Olympic values, skills development, well-being and healthy lifestyle, social responsibility and expression through digital media.

Day 1 of the Singapore 2010 YOG saw many medals being given out, including the first-ever YOG Gold medal which went to Yuka Sato, who represented Japan in Girls Triathlon. In the Youth Olympic Games and swimming, Singapore’s Rainer Ng failed to qualify for the finals of the Boys’ 100 metre Backstroke at the Singapore Sports School.Rainer finished fifth in the semi finals. China’s Dai Jun has taken the 400m youth men’s swimming gold at the Singapore Sports School. Dai won in a time of 3 minutes, 50.91 seconds. He beat South Africa’s Commonwealth Youth Games champion Chad Le Clos, who took silver, by less than half a second.

Over in badminton at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Singapore’s Huang Chao started his boys’ singles campaign with a 2 games to 1 victory in Pool H. The 18 year old beat India’s Sairaneeth Bhamidipati 21—12, 18—21, 21—17. Huang will face Peru’s Mario Cuba in his next group game on Monday. And over at the Kallang Tennis Centre, Singapore’s hope in the girls’ singles event, Stefanie Tan, is out. The 17 year old battled for an hour and 40 minutes, but eventually lost 6—2, 6—3 to Russia’s Daria Gavrilova in the first round.
