The Ski Jumping event known as the World Cup Kuopio happens live this Monday and Tuesday, March 8th and 9th. If you aren't familiar with the Olympic level event of Ski Jumping, then you are in for a treat. Ski Jumping is a sport in which the competitors go down the hill and fly off of a ramp to see who can get the farthest down the hill. The competitions that are held throughout the year are called World Cups and are held in different parts of the world. The sport originated in Norway around 1810 when a Norway Army Lieutenant showed how far he could jump in front of spectators and other soldiers, making it nine and a half meters. The sport really took off in 1860 and skiers were taking on harder and more challenging jumps. The first actual competition was known as the Husebyrennene and was held in 1879 in Oslo. Olaf Haugann, a Norway native set the world record for the first time with a jump of 20 meters.

The World Cup competitions are held on three different hills which include the Normal Hill competition, which the skiers reach distances of around 110 meters. Then there are the Large Hill competitions with distances of 145 meters as well as the ski flying competition which has a record of 239 meters which was set back in 2005 by Bjorn Einar Romoren.
