The European Water Polo Championship represents a sport competition for national water polo teams, currently carried biannually and arranged by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN), the governing European aquatics federation. There are both men's and women's competitions. The beginning European Water Polo Championship was held in 1926 in Budapest, Hungary, with just a men's competition. The women for the first time competed in 1985 Oslo, Norway for the European title. The water polo tournament was division of the European Aquatics Championships until 1999, when the event was classified and got its own independent tournament. Water polo is a team water sport. The playing team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals by getting the ball past the opposing team's goalkeeper into the net.

The competition lasts until September 11, during which time 20 teams (12 men's and eight women's) will play 64 matches. The tournament was formally opened by the President of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), Nory Kruchten, who said he was pleased that the championship was taking place in a country that is a water polo superpower. The opening ceremony was also addressed by the Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandic, and the President of the Croatian Water Polo Federation, Perica Bukic.
