Competitive Bowls is held every year, mostly in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, but also in parts of the U.S. and more recently in Japan. The world championships are held every year in the U.K and it is a 100,000 pound competition watched by over three million people on BBC. Bowls is also a competitive event at the Commonwealth Games. In the 2006 Commonwealth Games Kevin Kerkow from Australia and Malaysian Siti Zalina Ahmad won the singles golds. The 2010 the Commonwealth Games will be held in Delhi India.

The Premier Events that happen between national bowls groups are all affiliated with World Bowls Limited, with the World Championships held every four years. Men's and Women's are held together and countries are represented by 5 players. They play in a singles and then a four, as well as playing as a pair and triple. The events have the same format as the Olympics with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded for the best overall. The trophies are called the Leonard Trophy for the men's competition and the Taylor Trophy for the women's.
