Prior to this season the Cup was open to all English clubs, but now the National Division One teams play in the Powergen National Trophy instead.

Each year, the sixteen participating clubs are put into four pools that contains three English clubs and one Welsh club. Then the clubs play in one game in each team with the champions of each group moving to the semis. This event is called the EDF Energy Cup after the sponsor, EDF Energy of the UK, and it has gone through several name changes throughout the years including the John Player Cup, Pilkington Cup, Tetley's Bitter Cup and the Powergen Cup. The tournament is also even now known as the Anglo-Welsh Cup.
