The most recent victor of the European Challenge Cup was Northampton who beat Bourgoin 15-3 in 2009.

This next season will see key changes to the Challenge Cup such as only five of the pool winners qualifying for the knockout events. They will join three clubs that are dropped from the pool stage of the Heineken, the third through fifth highest second place teams. Another change this year is that although the winner will receive entry into the Heineken Cup the following year, the addition won't cost the country its allocation, with an exception if England or France have winning clubs in both the Heineken and Challenge Cup.

The 2004-2005 season saw Sale defeat Pau 27-3 at Kassam Stadium in front of over 7,000 fans while the following year's tournament was won by Clermont Auvergne beating Bath by 8 points. Last year's winner, the Northamption Saints get an automatic berth into the Heineken in the 2009-2010 Season.
