The FIVB World Championship is a volleyball event that is played indoors and is a men's and women's competition. It is actually the oldest FIVB International Event, but is not the same as the FIVB World Cup, World League or World Grand Prix. The FIVB was crated in 1947, and this international competition now allows men's and women's volleyball teams of more than one continent, with the first tournament happening in 1949, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. However, when it started it was only for men, and only for European nations.

The formula for the FIVB World Championship has changed over the years, but generally, there are twenty four teams that participate and to qualify takes around two years. Europe has the highest number of slots, and Africa and South America get the least number of slots. High ranked teams may only have to play one qualification tournament while lower ranked teams may play up to three. There are two phases of the competition, the preliminaries and the final round. Since 2004, the semifinals and finals are played according to the Olympic format.
