The sport caught on during the 19th century, and was played at public schools in England throughout. The first set of rules for the game of Rugby was created in 1870 by the male students at the Rugby School. The headmaster of the Rugby School, Dr. Thomas Arnold, influenced the additional of Rugby in public schools all across England, and eventually the sport went worldwide.

The First Tier nations of Rugby are England, France, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand, Italy, Scotland and Wales, and then the rest of the nations are in the second and third tier of the International competition. They include, Canada, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Samoa, Georgia, Fiji, Chile, the United States, Spain and Uruguay. The International Rugby Board is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and they oversee the Rugby Union. Some of these nations hold Rugby as their national sport.

Rugby exists in many forms including the Rugby Sevens, and starting in 2010 at London, Rugby Sevens will now be an Olympic demonstration event. At the International level Rugby is governed by the Rugby League International Federation and two major international events exists, the Australasia National Rugby League and the European Super League.
