Judo means Gentle Way and is one of the most skillful of all martial arts, originally from Japan at the end of the nineteenth century. The object of competitive Judo is to throw the opponent to the ground, or subdue or immobilize the opponent with grappling. Judo can also include strikes and thrusts as well as throws, but those techniques including weapon's defense, are not part of competitive Judo.

Judo is a full Martial Art, but is also a sport that was introduced at the Olympics in 1932 for the first time. This was simply a demonstration by Judo students, but in the 1964 Olympic games Judo became a competition for men, with women being able to compete at this level starting in 1988. The first Olympic Gold medal in Judo was won by Dutchman Anton Geesink in the open division, beating Japanese competitor Akio Kaminaga. These events are overseen by the International Judo Federation and competitors come from all over the world, but primarily Australia, and most of Europe, Brazil, Canada and the United States.

Judo competitions are held at the collegiate level and the competitions between UC Berkeley and San Jose State made Judo into the sport it is today, at the World Championships and the Olympic Games. The coaches of these two schools petitioned in 1953 to get Judo accepted as a sport with the weight classes it has today. If you want to watch these professional Judo events then we'll have them in high quality video streams and feeds direct from the competitions.
