Luge began in Switzerland in the late nineteenth century, joining its sister sports of Skeleton and Bobsled. The competition either takes place on natural or artificial tracks, that have walled in straightaways and sharp curves, that allow Luge riders to reach speeds of over 160 kmph. Luge is an Olympic sport, but also has competitions in various venues throughout the world.

Luge rules state that lugers must leave the start handles when the track is called clear, and then compete down the course, steering with the controls and ending up across the finish line, as lugers can no longer push their sleds across. It is allowed, however, to stop and reposition your sled during the competition and to push yourself off again. The temperature of the luge tracks are strictly controlled and there are weight limits on the competition sleds.
