Every year Ireland, Scotland and Wales compete in the Magners League, which is one of three major leagues that are based in Europe including the Guinness Premiership and the French Top 14. This year they are switching to a playoff structure that is similar to the one that the Guinness Premiership have in place. This tournament takes place between the months of September and May, with every team playing every other team twice, one at home and once away. The Magners League is the sole determining factor in European Qualifying. This tournament was originally known as the Celtic League.

The history of the league has changed somewhat over the past few years with Wales and Scotland joining up for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, and the Welsh Premier Division expanding to include Edinburgh and Glasgow which became the Welsh-Scottish League.   Then in 2001 the Irish Rugby Football Union, the Welsh Rugby Union and the Scottish Rugby Union joined forces to create the first incarnation of the Celtic League. Two teams left the league, the Border Reivers, who were here from 2002 to 2007 and the Celtic Warriors, who left in 2004. The Reivers hailed from Galashiels, Scotland while the Warriors were from Wales.
