Rugby Varsity Cup Live

The FNB Varsity Cup is played between the top eight universities in the country that play Rugby in South Africa. It all begin in 2008, with the first season won by Stellenbosch University. The tournament is named after the sponsor, the First National Bank, which is one of the top four banks in the country. All the games are held on university campus's, and only students of the universities involved compete. 

All of the teams involved play each other once throughout the season, with the scoring following the format of the Super 14, which means that teams receive 4 points for a win and 2 for a draw. Bonus points are also awarded for scoring four or more tries in a game, or losing a game with a points spread of 7 or less. At the end of the season four teams enter the semis, with the top 2 moving onto the finals.

The 2008 season had UCT topping the standings, with Maties close behind. Other teams that competed included the Tuks, who came in number three, Pukke, UJ, Shimlas, TUT and NMMU. In the semis it was UCT facing Pukke, with UCT taking the semi. In the other semi-final, Maties beat Tuks. This put UCT and Maties in the final which was played at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch with the final ending 16-10 Maties favor.

The 2009 season ended with Maties topping the list, with UCT second, a reversal of the inaugural season. Pukke and Tuks were again in 3^rd and 4^th but in a reversed position from last year. The semifinal had Maties hosting Tuks, and UCT hosting Pukke.
