So where did the name Skeleton come from for a winter sport? An Englishman in the late 17^th century named Mr. Child created a sled that was designed mostly of steel. Most agree that the name originated because this original sled looked like a skeleton, the sport was then called thus. Skeleton was first practiced in Switzerland, but in 1905 began being practiced in other countries at Bobsleigh competitions. The first Austrian Championships were held a year later and in 1923 the FIBT was formed and just three years later declared Bobsleigh and Skeleton Olympic Sports. The first Skeleton Olympic Gold Medal winner was an American, Jennson Heaton and his younger brother was his runner-up.

We'll have all of the Skeleton events for you right here on Live Sports Event. The World Cup has been a major competition in Skeleton since the inaugural season in 1986-1987. The women's events began in the 1996-1997 season and Skeleton events are generally held from fall to early spring. Skeleton returned to the Olympics in 2002, after being off the schedule of 54 years.
