The International Weightlifting Federation splits the men up into eight different division, and women into seven. The men's classes are the 123 lb, 137, 152, 170, 187, 207, 231, and one more for those over 231. The women's include the 106, 117, 128, 139, 152, 165 and over 165. The divisions are decided by body mass of the lifter, and prizes are awarded for the heaviest lifts in the snatch, heaviest in the clean and jerk and then heaviest in the combined events. The winner is decided by the strength-to-wieght ratio of the lifter which means that even though a lower weight class lifts less weight than a heavier one, the lower weight class may still be awarded the medal.
