This premiership was originally the top series of Rugby played in Wales, but in 2003 the Welsh Rugby Union put into action a plan that would make the country represented in Magners League and Heineken Cup competitions by what was originally five, but now have dropped down to four, sides. The premier division clubs are now for developing clubs toward the regional teams.

Some of the changes over recent years haven included the teams being reduced to 14 teams from 16 in the 2006 year, plus a new points system was set up in 2007, when the Welsh Premiership adopted the same system that is used in Magners League rugby. The new points system gives four points for a win and two points for a draw, with bonus points available for scoring four tries or losing by less than 7. Another rule put in place around the same time was the the home stadium of the team must be kept up to meet ground and facility standards. If a club does not meet these, they – instead of the club with the least points, will fall into last place on the standings. A change in the most recent season was that the top six from the former season would compete in the British and Irish Cup competition.
