US Women Lose To Bulgaria

Paula WeishoffIt was the second day of the FIVB Women's Junior World Championship under 20 competition. The U.S. Women's Junior National Team was playing Bulgaria in Tijuana and lost to them with a final of 3-1. That leaves them 0 for 2 in the World Championships, which finshed up the four team round robin for Pool D on Saturday, where they will play Turkey, who is currently 1-0. The two teams with the highest points will move forward to the second round winner's pools.

It seemed that the U.S team was doomed from the beginning, with a slow start but was able to come back from an 11-4 scoreboard to take the first set 25-23. However, they weren't able to carry that momentum to the second set, but lost by seven points with a final of 25-18. The third set, they were at 8-6, when a technical time out was called. The set finished up with Bulgaria on top 25-17. In the deciding fourth set, it was looking like Bulgaria might have slipped up, with the US team ahead 5-1. However, Bulgaria came back and took the lead to 14-7, and ending the game with the fourth set final at 25-17 again.

The Head Coach for the US Women's Junior National Team, Paula Weishoff said that the team is getting better, and that they were going for the 9-12 positions when they played Turkey the next day. Bulgaria was happy about the thirty one errors from team USA in the match, which included fourteen missed serves. Bulgaria was able to turn nearly 50 percent of their attacks into kills. The Captain for the USA Team, Kendall Bateman said that Bulgaria was a strong team and that they fought hard the entire match
